What is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon?
An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a dental specialist. After completing dental school, the surgeon obtains an advanced degree in surgery techniques through additional years of training in a hospital and/or university setting. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon performs services such as diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases or injuries to the hard and soft tissues in the mouth and jaw. 1. Your first visit to Dr. A. L. Checchio & Dr. G. T. Dowd LTD. will establish a foundation for our relationship with you. During your first visit and each subsequent visit, we make sure to obtain important medical history and medication history. It is critical, that you arrive with a list of medical and surgical history as well as a list of all of your medications with the dosing.
2. Being well-prepared for your appointment will ensure that the doctor has all of the needed information to provide the best possible care for you. It also will help relieve any unnecessary anxiety you may be feeling. Please print out and fill out the “Patient Health History Form” by clicking here. Bring copies of all of your medications, your health history, any notes and x-rays from your dentist and/or physician. If you are unable to print the forms, please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment to fill out the new patient forms.
For patients under 18, a parent or guardian MUST be present. For adopted patients under the age of 18, please bring a copy of the Legal Certificate of Adoption for our records. For any patients that are unable to provide informed consent, please have your designee present and bring a copy of your Power of Attorney.

What To Expect on the Day of Surgery
What to Expect on the Day of Surgery - There are some common elements involved in oral surgery procedures that can help you prepare.
1. After you have checked-in and completed all of the necessary medical and consent forms, the doctor and staff will review your health history and medications. Your blood pressure and your blood oxygen level will be monitored. Additional x-rays may be acquired. Your blood sugar may be checked if you are diabetic. An explanation of your procedure, possible side effects and post-operative instructions will be discussed.
